PRELIM 03 - Aseptic Technique Flashcards
Refers to a procedure that is performed under sterile conditions
Aseptic technique
7 sources of contamination
Atmosphere, Breath, Hands, Clothing, Hair, Working surface, Equipment
It is the process by which the article, surface, or medium is made free from all microorganisms either in the vegetative or spore state
Sterilization
It is the process by which an article, surface, or medium is made free from all pathogenic microorganisms
Disinfection
Prevention of infection by inhibiting or arresting the growth and multiplication of infectious agents
Antisepsis
2 methods of sterilization
Physical, Chemical
Includes dry heat, moist heat, filtration, and radiation (Methods of sterilization)
Physical method
Includes hot air oven and flaming (Physical methods of sterilization)
Dry heat
Includes using steam under high pressure using an autoclave (Physical methods of sterilization)
Moist heat
Used for heat sensitive liquids like antibiotic solutions and sera (Physical methods of sterilization)
Filtration
Used for enclosed area such as inoculation room and virus labs (Physical methods of sterilization)
Radiation
Includes alcohols, aldehydes, and phenolics (Methods of sterilization)
Chemical method
Used for surfaces and skin; example includes ethyl alcohol (Chemical methods of sterilization)
Alcohols
Example includes formaldehyde, which is used for equipment such as centrifuge (Chemical methods of sterilization)
Aldehydes
Used for floors, wall, and benches; example includes phenols (Chemical methods of sterilization)
Phenolics
