prejudice Flashcards
what is prejudice?
the holding of derogatory attitudes/ beliefs towards members of a group on account of their membership in that group
Authoritarian Personality
- overly deferential to those in authority, whilst hostile towards those perceived as inferior.
- associated with very conventional value systems
Freudian Perspectives
Authoritarian personality - derived from childhood.
Child aggression displaced onto others
Realistic Conflict Theory
(attitudes reflect the objective interests of the ingroup)
Two Implicit Assumptions:
- if the interests between 2 groups coincide, then relations between groups are harmonious (vice versa)
Sherifs Experiment
(evidence for RCT)
Boys aged 12 - ‘well-adjusted’ - so the effects could not be attributed to social etc deprivation
Stages 1: normal activities/ cooperation (harmonious)
Stage 2: competition - conflicts of interest (hostility)
What does Sherif’s findings suggest?
You can have organised people but when there are conflicting interests they can turn against each other
BUT
there must be other factors in order for conflict to emerge (prejudice)
Minimal Group Paradigm
Scientific attempt to create ‘empty environments’ while researchers could add variables that would elicit discrimination. Made ingroup/ outgroup.
investigating the minimal conditions required for discrimination to occur between groups
Research shows…
that people discriminate against those who belong to different groups from themselves… maybe they show prejudice because they think people in their group will like them for it
