what is pregnancy?

what is conception?
when sperm and egg meet- fertilization
what is the fertilization process?
sperm meets eggs

what the signs of pregnancy?
period is late, missed or abnormal breast tenderness or fullness nausea and vomiting changes in appetite frequent urination fatigue or tiredness
what is a zygote?
a single cell
what is the embryo?
the mass of cells during the first eight weeks after conception
what is the fetus?
unborn baby- the developing cells
what is the placenta?
a temporary organ that attaches the egg to the inner wall of the uterus
what is the umbilical chord?
a rope-like structure where the mother and baby exchange oxygen, nutrients, and waste.
what is the amniotic sac?
the sac the baby lives in. provides protection and serves as a cushion.
what is an ectopic pregnancy?
the zygote implants in the fallopian tube
what is a miscarriage?
the embryo of the fetus is expelled from the uterus prematurely.
what is toxemia?
the pregnant woman has high blood pressure, swelling, and protein in urine
what is a premature birth?
the baby is born before 37 weeks
what is a still birth?
a baby is born dead and fully developed
what is a cesarean section?
surgical removal of baby
what is a breech birth?
when the fetus is born feet of butt first
what is an ultrasound?
high frequency sound waves to take an image of the fetus
what is a amniocentesis?
a long needle is inserted into the mothers abdominal and uterine walls into the amniotic sac and draws fluid which is tested
what is childbirth?
the process by which a baby moves from the uterus to the outside world
what are the three stages of labor?
effacement and dilation of the cervix
delivery of the baby
delivery of the placenta
what is the postpartum period?
the 6 to 8 week period after the birth of the baby
