What is pre eclampsia caused by?
Placenta doesn’t receive enough blood (improper development during first half of pregnancy), disrupts blood supply between mom and baby, affects mothers blood vessels and kidneys
When does pre eclampsia occur (time frame)
After 20 weeks of pregnancy/ up to 20 weeks after birth
Symptoms of pre eclampsia
Face/hands/arms swelling, headaches, vision changes, nausea, abdominal pain, dib
Why does pre eclampsia cause high blood pressure/ swelling in lower regions of body?
New blood vessels that supply blood to placenta are faulty, so blood profusion is poor/ blood isn’t circulated properly, causes fluid build up
What is eclampsia?
Severe complication of pre eclampsia, can develop from pre eclampsia
Effects of eclampsia on body?
High bp damages blood vessels in brain, causing poor blood flow and swelling.
Symptoms of eclampsia
Stroke, coma, convulsive seizures, severe headaches, difficulty breathing,
Nausea/ vomiting, abdominal pain, trouble urinating, blurred vision, swelling
Risk factors for developing pre-eclampsia
First pregnancy, diabetes, obesity, multiples, renal disease, young/old maternal age, cardiovascular disease
