Precipitate Flashcards
What are precipitation reactions?
reactions that result in the formation of an insoluble product
What is a double exchange reaction?
cation from other compound will break apart and form a compound with the anion in the other compound
What does aqueous mean?
substance is soluble in water
What does solid mean?
insoluble water/the precipitate
What are always soluble?
alkali metals, ammonium, nitrate, acetate
What are almost always soluble?
halogens except lead and silver
What are almost always insoluble?
hydroxide, sulfur, carbonate, phosphate
What do you put next to a soluble compound?
aq
What do you put next to an insoluble compound?
s
Is there precipitate if products are both aqueous?
no
What is a molecular equation?
full balanced equation, coefficients, and states of matter
What is a total ionic equation?
separate the aqueous ions. Include coefficients, charges, and states of matter for all aqueous ions (DO NOT SEPARATE SOLIDS)
What is a net ionic equation?
who reacted? generally this will be aq–>s
only show elements that reacted together to make the precipitate
What are spectator ions?
aqueous elements that do not change states
How does sulfur affect wild rice?
because there is a high concentration of sulfur/sulfate in waters and roots of wild rice start to rot and turn black
