Probiotics
A
live micro-organisms that when administered in adequate amounts provide a health benefit to the host.
- colonise the gut - crowd out pathogenic bacteria
- supress the growth of pathogenic bacteria - block epithelial attachment or invasion by pathogens. (out compete pathogenic bacteria for nutrients)
- enhance mucosal functions (cell lining GIT)
- improve the ability for immune cells to destroy pathogens
