Pre-Op Assessment Flashcards
Metabolic Equivalents of Functional Capacity (METs) are used to assess?
assesses functional capacity and cardiorespiratory fitness which indicate cardiac risk
the scoring system used is METs
What is the meaning of 1 MET?
1 MET is the resting or basal oxygen consumption of a 40-year-old, 70-kg man
METs score interpretation
Functional capacity is classified as:
excellent (>10 METS)
good (7 METs to 10 METS)
moderate (4 METs to 6 METS)
poor (<4 METS)
____ METs indicate patients with sufficient functional capacity to proceed for surgery
> 4 METs
may proceed for surgery provided patients with cardiac risk factors are properly managed with statin and β-blocker therapy
ASA physical status classification
- Subjective interpretation
- doesn’t consider severity of planned surgery
- assessment of patient’s medical co-morbidities
- used with other factors (eg, type of surgery, frailty, level of deconditioning), it can be helpful in predicting perioperative risks.
- affects billing (ASA 3 and higher get reimbursed more $/unit)
ASA I
A normal healthy patient
ASA II
A patient with mild systemic disease
ASA III
A patient with severe systemic disease
ASA IV
A patient with severe systemic disease that is a constant threat to life
ASA V
A moribund patient who is not expected to survive without the operation
ASA VI
A declared brain-dead patient whose organs are being removed for donor purposes
