Anesthesia Machine Safety Checkout Flashcards
MOMSAID pneumonic
Manual ventilation device, oxygen, machine check & monitors, suction, airway, IV, drugs and defibrillator
ASC pneumonic
airway, suction, circuit
ASC turnover checklist
Used before EACH procedure:
- Airway = check airway equipment and emergency drugs, confirm proper vent settings & monitors/alarms
- Suction = verify maximum suction power available
- Circuit = perform breathing circuit pressure and leak check, observe proper functioning of I/E valves
Pipeline pressure should be at?
> 45-50 psi
cylinders should be half full which is how much psi for oxygen, air & nitrous
> 1,000 psi for O2 & Air
725psi for N2O
Purpose of N2o link system
The measured O2 concentration must be >21% through a full range of N2O flows to prevent deliver of a hypoxic mixture
Purpose of O2 supply failure device
An alarm sounds and displays “No O2 Pressure” when O2 pressure is lost. The flow of N20 should also stop. Check cylinder and pipeline O2 supply.
What is the purpose of the vaporizer interlock device
Prevent simultaneous administration of more than one volatile agent
What is the purpose of O2 flush mechanism?
Used to rapidly refill or flush the breathing circuit & bellows
It receives O2 from the pipeline or cylinder & directs a high unmetered flow (between 35 & 75 L/min) directly to the common gas outlet.
Caution: Barotrauma & Gas Dilution
What is the purpose of the scavenging system?
Prevent contamination of the OR with waste anesthetic gases
Before EVERY patient check?
- emergency equipment and drugs
- suction
- monitors, equipment, and alarm limits
- test breathing circuit and reservoir bag for leaks.
How to test the breathing circuit and reservoir bag for leaks?
- Set bag/vent switch to “bag” and O2 flow to minimum.
- Close APL valve (set to 70 cm H2O) and close the breathing circuit at the patient “Y” connection (use your hand or test plug).
- Pressurize circuit reservoir bag with O2 flush to 30 cm H20.
- Verify that circuit pressure does not decrease and stays at 30cm H2O.
- Open APL valve (set to 0 cm H2O).
- Verify circuit pressures decrease to zero.
The anesthesia time out consists of?
To be performed before each anesthetic:
- Appropriate patient?
- Appropriate case?
- Confirm proper ventilator settings and readiness to deliver anesthesia.
- Monitors functional?
- Capnogram present?
- SpO2 present?
- Emergency drugs/airway available?
