Practical Calculations Flashcards
Concentration of a drug
The amount of a drug in a given volume of blood plasma.
Dilution
A process of reducing the concentration of a substance in a solution.
Dosage
The amount of a drug dose and the frequency at which the medication must be administered to a patient.
Dosage form
A drug’s physical appearance; the form in which they are marketed for use.
Dosage range
A drug’s dosage formula expressed as a set of two numbers; a minimum and a maximum safe dose.
Dose
The amount of drug to be administered to a patient (e.g.: 100 mg).
Equivalent weight
One gram molecular weight divided by the total positive valence of the material.
Milliequivalent
A term used to express the concentration of electrolytes in a solution; 1/1000 of an equivalent weight.
Percent concentration
An expression of the strength of a substance based on the ratio of parts per hundred (e.g.: 25%).
Quantity sufficient
The amount of a solution added to arrive at the desired volume.
Regimen
A program for administration of a drug that includes the route, the dose, the frequency, and the duration of administration.
Ratio concentration
An expression of the strength of a substance based on the ratio of its parts (e.g.: 1:32).
Solute
A substance dissolved in a solvent to form a solution.
Solution
A mixture of two or more substances that are combined with each other.
Solvent
A solution capable of dissolving other substances.
