Define ventilation
Removal of heated air, smoke and other airbourne contaminents from a structure or location and replace it with cleaner cooler air
What are the phases of ventilation
Phase 1 - Post fire once the fire has been completely extinguished
Phase 2 - fire has been controlled but not extinguished (defensive)
Phase 3 - Before control of fire (offensive)
What level can lincoln work off?

How far should the fan be placed away?

What are the forced ventilation types
- Positive pressure - using the fan
- Negative pressure - using the branch using the venturi principle 3.
- Mechanical - using a system already in place such as factory vents
What are the asvantages of PPV
- Replenish the O2 and reduce carbon monoxide levels
- Control temp and humidity
- Remove moisture, dust and other airbourne contaminents
- Improved vis and aids navigation
- Restricts fire and smoke damage to property

- Is the area too big?
- Is the exhaust vent too big?
- Is the fan working to maximum efficiency?
- Is the path from the fan to exhaust vent obstructed?

When should PPV not be used?
If its showing signs and symptoms of a backdraught

- Is user competent
- Dont use on stairs
- Use ear defenders
- Visors down
- Solid ground
- Dont refuel when in use
- Dont move it once in use
- Dont start it if it looks damaged
