Name the symptoms of heat exhaustion
- Unwell
- Tired
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Cramps
- Rapid weakening pulse and breathing
- Extreme thirst and mouth dryness
- Weakness and feeling weak and stumbling around, poor movements.
Name 3 types of heat related conditions
Heat exhaustion, Heat stroke and Heat faint
What are the symptoms of heat faint
- Headaches
- Dizzy
- Weakness
- Tunnel vision/blurry vision
- Pale/sweaty skin
- Weak/slow pulse
- Loss of consciousness
Heat stroke symptoms
- Life threatening
- Dizzy
- Headaches
- Irritable/restless and confused
- No sweating
- Muscle weakness and cramps
- Unconsciousness and convulsions (like twitching).
How do you treat a casualty who has suffered with a heat illness
Move them to a cool area, lie them down, reassure them keep them calm, cool them down can be rapid but be wary of shock/hyperthermia, remove clothing to ventilate
What are the effects of heat related illnesses?
Psychological:
- Anxiety
- Deceeased cognitive skills
- Confusion
- Over estimate capabilities
Physiological:
- Work rate increases
- Performance drops
- Fatigue
How do you prevent heat related illnesses?
- Stay hydrated
- Maintain fitness
- Withdraw when necessary
What is heat exhaustion?
It is the mild response/reaction to heat
What is heat stroke?
It is the failure of the body thermastat resulting in body temp being 40+
What is heat faint
Reduction in blood flow to the brain due to exposure to a hot environment

30 mins and 500ml
