Power Point 14 - 15 Asbestos and Hazardous Waste Flashcards
List the 3 different types of asbestos and their colour
Chrysotile (White)
Amosite (Brown)
Crocidolite (Blue)
List 3 types of effects on health asbestos has
Lung cancer
Mesothelioma
Asbestosis
How long can the delay between exposure of asbestos and the adverse health systems take?
It can take anywhere from 15 to 60 years
List 3 applications in which asbestos has been used
Decorative finishes - (Artex, Plaster and floor tiles)
Accessories - (flash guards, matting, fuse carriers and distribution board covers)
Insulation storage compartments - Vessels and pipework
List the 3 steps you must take when you suspect asbestos
If unsure of material STOP work and find out
Assume if it looks like asbestos it is
The person in charge must then investigate
List the 6 things you must do when working with asbestos
1 - Keep the materials damp whilst working with them
2 - Only use hand tools
3 - Ensure you use PPE including a respirator not a dust mask
4 - Clean as you go and don’t pile up waste
5 - Use special ‘Type H’ Vacuum cleaner
6 - Always wash after working inc for breaks
List the 4 things you must not do when working with asbestos
1 - Use power tools
2 - Take overalls home to wash - only use disposable type
3 - Eat or drink in the work area
4 - Smoke, as risk for lung cancer is already increased
List the 5 things you must do when in charge and asbestos is present
1 - Identify area of concern 2 - Prevent exposure 3 - Ban use of power tools 4 - Enclose the work and use dust extraction 5 - Dampen the material
How must you dispose of hazardous waste?
It must be packaged, labeled then taken to a licensed disposal site
Who enforces waste management laws?
Waste management laws are enforced by the environment agency and local authorities
All waste produced on site can present a real safety hazard to workers if it is not properly managed throughout the project. What must you do to limit these hazards?
Decide how waste streams produced during building work will be managed in a timely and effective way
who is responsible for the collection and disposal of specific wastes produced on site; problems often arise when employer and employee duties are not made clear before work starts
List some 4 for waste management on a work site
1 - Flammable materials - Ensure all flammable materials such as packaging and timber off cuts are cleared away regularly
2 - Work areas - Make sure the clearing of waste is a priority for all trades and everyone is aware of what is required
3 - Skips -make use of skips to store waste safely
4 - Waste within buildings - Consider waste generated inside the building and weather wheelie bins/ chutes must be used for easy disposal
What are the 3 principal destinations for waste generated on a site
1 - Recycling
2 - Hazardous waste
3 - Landfill
What are the 4 hazardous waste categories?
1 - Always hazardous - Lead, batteries or fluorescent tubes
2 - Never hazardous - edible oils
3 - May or may not be hazardous - ink or paint
4 - Special waste - harmful to human health, flammable, corrosive or eco toxic
What are 6 examples of Special waste?
1 - Treated timber 2 - Concrete additives 3 - Contaminated oils 4 - Preservatives 5 - Lead-acid batteries 6 - Fluorescent light tubes
