Power Point 12 - Access Equipment and Hazards Flashcards
Name 5 different types of ladders and their uses
Pole - Used for access to scaffolds & used upto 12m
Extension Ladders - Are split into sections and are extendable to reach required height Step Ladders - Are mainly used indoor, must be used on a firm base
Roof Ladders - For use on sloped roofs, must be accessed from a scaffold not a ladder. additionally must be hooked on to prevent falling/slipping down roof
Describe the steps on how to use ladders safely
Inspected before every use
Must only be based on firm, hard ground
Must be raised by 2 people
Should stand at an angle of 1:4 (one unit out four units up)
Must be secured if more than 3m up or otherwise footed
Should extend at least five rungs (or 1.07m above landing) Never over reach when using
Pre-use checks for ladders
visual inspection for - Missing, damaged anti slip on metal fiberglass ladders items stuck to feet (dirt, stones or other debris) Mud, grease or oil on rungs, stiles, steps or platform Cracks, splits, bends or warps in the rungs, stiles or platform Missing broken or weakened rungs Missing or damaged tie rod Cracked damaged fastenings (welds, rivets etc) Rust or sharp edges
What is PASMA?

Power Point 13 - Dealing with Hazards - List 5 different types of hazardous substances
1 - Adhesives 2 - Solvents 3 - Lubricants 4 - Jointing compounds 5 - Cleaning agents
List 5 different precautions taken when working with Hazardous substances
1 - PPE 2 - Ventilation 3 - Risk assessment 4 - Method statements 5 - Safe systems of work
What is a safe system of work?
A safe system of work is a method that results from a systematic examination of the working process to identify the hazards and to specify work methods designed either to completely remove the hazards or to control and minimize the risk
What is a method statement?
A method statement is a description of a safe system of work, presenting in a logical sequence and generally in writing a method of undertaking an activity without risk to health.
What is the 6 points in order of the hierarchy of control?
1 - Eliminate - ‘Does this hole need to be there?’ 2 - Substitute - ‘Can this task be done somewhere else?’ 3 - Isolate - e.g. by putting something over the hole to cover it 4 - Control - e.g. by introducing guarding around the hole 5 - Manage - e.g. By implementing a safe system of work near a hole 6 - PPE - e.g. By working with a harness or a rope
Describe a Permit to Work?
A permit to work is a procedure written safe system of work that ensures potentially dangerous work is done safely. It also serves as a means of communication between all members on the work site. It is not a replacement of a risk assessment
What are the 2 hazards associated with adhesives?
Give of harmful fumes Can cause health problems if ingested or absorbed through the skin
