How is avian pox spread?
Mosquito, biting fly (seasonal)
After pustule bursts and have contact with another bird
Signs of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae
Bacteremia leads to skin infarcts (diamond or fan shaped areas of necrosis), parboiled (pink/tan) enarlaged liver
Is Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae zoonotic?
Yes - causes abscesses or carbuncles on fingers
Treatment for Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae
Tetracycline, penicillin
How is Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae transmitted?
Environmental from soil into wounds (fighting) or introduced from AI (turkey)
How do you treat mites on birds?
Treat both birds and environment with permethrin
When will you see Northern Fowl Mites on a bird? Will it bite humans?
During the day
Will not bite humans
When will you see Red Mites on a bird? Will it bite humans?
Only feed and on bird at night - live in cracks in building
Will bite humans if birds are removed
