What are common indications for potassium sparing diuretics?
As part of combination therapy - for treatment of hypokalaemia arising from loop/thiazide diuretics
What are examples of potassium sparing diuretics?
Amiloride
What is the mechanism of action of potassium-sparing diuretics?
In combination with other diuretics, theycounteract potassium loss and enhance diuresis. Amiloride acts on DCT, inhibiting reabsorption of Na+, leading to Na+ and water excretiuon and K+ retention
What are important adverse effects of amiloride?
- GI upset
- Dizziness
- Hypotension
- Urinary symptoms
- Electrolyte disturbance - hypo/hyperkalaemia, hyponatraemia
When is using amiloride contraindicated?
- Severe renal impairment
- Hyperkalaemia
What is the most commonly used forumlation of amiloride?
Combination therapy - loop or thiazide diuretics
- Co-amilofruse
- Co-amilozide
