Alpha blockers Flashcards
What are common indications for using alpha blockers?
- Benign prostatic hyperplasia - first line
- Resistant hypertension - stage 4 treatment
What are examples of alpha blockers?
- Doxazocin
- Tamsulosin
- Alfuzosin
How do alpha blockers work?
Alpha1-adrenoceptors are found mainly in smooth muscle, including in blood vessels and the urinary tract. Stimulation induces contraction; blockade induces relaxation. Alpha1-blockers therefore cause vasodilatation and a fall in blood pressure, and reduced resistance to bladder outflow
What are important side effects of alpha blockers?
- Postural hypotension
- Dizzines
- Syncope
What are important interactions to be aware when using alpha blockers?
Any other anti-hypertensives - cause first dose hypertension
What is doxazocin used for?
- BPH
- Hypertension
What is tamsulosin used for?
BPH
What dose of tamsulosin is used in BPH?
400 micrograms
When is best to take doxazocin?
Initially take at night due to pronounced blood pressure lowering effects
