Postures and Planes Flashcards
Sagittal
Divides body into left and right
Coronal
Divides body into anterior and posterior
Transverse
Divides body into upper and lower
A-P axis
perpendicular to coronal place
Transverse axis
perpendicular to the sagittal plane
Longitudinal axis
perpendicular to the transverse plane
Postural compensation
Occurs in all three planes of body motion in order to keep body balanced and eyes level.
Postural decompensation
distribution of body mass away from ideal when postural homeostatic mechanisms are overwhelmed. Results in failure of body to align
Coronal decompensation results in:
scoliosis
Transverse decompensation results in:
rotation decompensation
Sagittal decompensation results in:
kyphosis/lordosis
Normal AP curve of thoracic spine is:
kyphosis, concave anteriorly and convex posteriorly
Normal AP curve of lumbar and cervical spine is:
Lordosis; convex anteriorly
Funnel chest, depressed lower sternum, compression of internal structures:
Pectus excavatum
PIgeon chest, abnormal prominence of sternum anteriorly
Pectus carinatum
