Biomechanics Flashcards
The moment
A force applied plus the moment arm
Moment arm:
The distance from center of a joint to the muscle attachment site. Moment arm = force x distance
joint reaction force:
Summation of the separate moments and force affecting a contracting muscle
Slower stretch
Less resistance. Associated with creep. The slower, longer the squeeze, the more complete expression of fluid from within muscle matrix.
Internal and external forces can:
Fracture bones, dislocate joints, disrupt muscle and connective tissue
Consistent repetitive stress can cause an alteration to the structure in the form of:
Structural failure, deformation, adaptation
What behavior can create as many problems in a structure as the original insult?
Guarding
Always check a joint ___ and ____ when assessing viscerosomatic dysfunction
Above and below
biotribology is what
study of biological systems, human joints
Wolff’s law is:
Notion that bone is increased where needed and reabsorbed where it is not
Hypertrophy of skeletal muscle is due to:
increased cross section of muscle fibers due to physical training.
Atrophy of skeletal muscle occurs due to:
Disuse or functional alteration of nerve stimulus to the msucle
Progression of OSE
Gait and posture, A/P Spinal Curvature (scoliosis), TART findings, Inspection (?), Percussion, Papation
Always assess:
ROM, pain, stability, muscle strength/tone, note any atrophy and abnormal movements
