Tenants of Osteopathic Structural Exam
Body is unit. Body is able to self-regulate. Structure/function are reciprocally related. Therapy is based on body unity, self regulation and relationship between structure and function.
Ophthalmoscope is used to:
visualize inner aspect of eye. Be sure to ID red reflex.
Snellen Chart is used to:
Test visual acuity. 20/20 is normal.
Otoscope is used to:
Look in ears.
Oropharynx examination is looking at:
back of mouth
Tuning fork is used in two ways:
hearing evaluation and vibratory sense
Reflex Hammer used for:
Deep tendon reflex.
Locations of upper extremity deep tendon reflexes:
Biceps (strike your thumb), triceps (triceps ligament), brachioradialis (ligament)
Locations of lower extremity deep tendon reflexes:
Patellar reflex and achilles reflex (tendons of both)
Sphygmomanometer used to:
check blood pressure, placed over brachial artery
Principle of blood pressure test:
air in bladder compresses brachial artery, stopping flow. As cuff deflates, circulation starts moving again. First sound is systolic. When sound stops is diastole.
