Postural Reactions Flashcards
newborn sensation
Cues reflexive movements
childhood+ sensation
Guides volitional movements & postural reactions
sensation
Visual Auditory Somatosensory -Touch -Temperature -Proprioception -Nociception Vestibular
POSTURAL REACTIONS
Help humans maintain posture in a changing environment
-Righting
-Protective
-Equilibrium
Postural reactions do not integrate. They evolve and mature. Ability to coordinate mobility and stability
mobility =
movement
stability =
posture against gravity
mobility and stability
- Uncontrolled mobility
- Stability develops
- Volitional, skilled mobility develops
eg. infant kicking
controlled, skilled movements are a combination of
mobility and stability
LATERAL HEAD or
LABRYNTHINE RIGHTING
- Maintain or restore alignment of head or trunk in space
- Vestibular input to orient the head
- In any direction
- Without vision
OPTICAL RIGHTING
Visual input to orient the head
NECK ON BODY RIGHTING
- Maintain or restore alignment of body segments in relation to each other
- Log roll, no dissociation
- Proprioceptive and tactile input to orient the head
- eyes on horizon
- birth-4mo (neonatal)
BODY ON BODY RIGHTING
Starts at legs & hips
-Segmental roll
PTs utilize
- Practice rolling
- Core & neck strength
LANDAU REACTION (TLR)
Combo of optical head righting, body righting & labyrinthine righting
Assess & strengthen extensors
3 mo. to 1-2 years
also a postural reaction
a baby should have head control at
4 months (red flag marker)
EQUILIBRIUM REACTIONS
Total body response -Slow shift of COG outside base of support Automatic More sophisticated than righting reactions Relies on sensory stimuli -Vestibular -Proprioception -Visual
LATERAL SITTING EQUILIBRIUM REACTION
Head and trunk righting
Arm and leg abduct opposite the weight shift
Followed by head and trunk rotation toward the abducted extremities
equilibrium reaction progresses and persists
Prone: 6 months Supine: 7-8 mo Sitting: 7-8 mo Quadruped: 9-12 mo Standing: 12-24 mo Occurs after basic stability in that position is attained Persists way to practice falling safely
equilibrium reactions regress due to
poor strength
decreased ROM
equilibrium reactions that are not present or ineffective result in
higher fall risk
unable to right self
PROTECTIVE REACTIONS (parachute response)
Extremity response
to a quick displacement
of COG outside base of support
**when equilibrium reaction
is inadequate
upper extremity protective extension in sitting
Forward: 6-7 mo
Sideways: 7-8 mo
Backward: 9-10 mo
STEPPING or STAGGERING RESPONSE
forward step
practiced with Giordano
may not have other strategies with AFOs
