Define the postpartum period and how long is it?
From the time the placenta is expelled to the uterus being restored to its pre-pregnant state. Takes about 6-8 weeks
What is normal endo measurements in a postpartum uterus?
5-13mm
What is the normal sonographic appearance of a postpartum uterus?
Up to umbilicus with prominent vessels
What are some postpartum abnormalities one may find on ultrasound?
-hemorrhage
-infection
-RPOC
What is a strong sonographic indicator for retained products?
Echogenic mass
What is the sonographic appearance of endometritis (more commonly occurs after c section)
-completely normal endo and uterus
-dilated uterine cavity filled with fluid
-gas in the endo
-fluid and gas in endo
Name 3 causes for postpartum hemorrhage
-abnormal attachment of the placenta to the uterine wall (placenta accreta)
-cervical or vaginal lacerations
-retained products of conception
-prior myomectomy
-prior c-section
-maternal age >35
-uterine atony
