What do postmodernists explore?
The ways digital communication is emerging as part of a postmodern society.
Do they see digital communication as positive or negative?
Neither, they’re focused on exploring what is possible with new forms of technology.
What has sharing on the Internet enabled people to do?
Develop parts of their identity.
What does the way people use social networks reveal?
How people create their identity as it shows how they see themselves and how others see them.
Collins - micro.
By looking at social networks using a ‘micro’ approach, it helps us see how people view the world around them.
Bjorklund - autobiography.
In a postmodern world digital communication allows people to manipulate and update their ongoing autobiography continually.
Hart - like-minded.
Identities are created both on and offline and people find like-minded friends on social media.
Case - mistakes.
New social media makes it hard to remove mistakes as everything is visible once you post it, you can’t get rid of it.
Hart - facebook.
Facebook posts are insignificant and superficial but we can use events to understand people’s feelings and actions.
How do postmodernists explain media as a form of surveillance?
People are being controlled through increasing amounts of information being collected.
Foucault - crime.
Presents the idea of someone who is being watched is less likely to commit crime as their chances of being caught are much greater.
