Positive Flashcards
Focus on the good life
-Segimen distinguishes between three types of life- pleasant, good, and meaningful life.
-Most people are living a pleasant life, but we would all be better off if we could achieve the good life.
-Once we achieve the good life, we could aim to live the most fulfilling ‘meaningful life’
Example of good life
-Positive connection= our ability to love, trust, and forgive.
-Positive individual traits= may include personal qualities such as morality and courage.
-Life regulation qualities= being able to regulate and control our behaviour using things such as autonomy and interdepence.
Acknowledgement of free will
-States that humans are in charge of their own emotions and have free will to adapt and change how they direct them.
-Contrasts determinist approaches.
-Recognising our own strengths and virtues and working on developing them to make our lives better.
Diener and Seligman
-In 2002, they found that students who made the free will choice to invest time in relationships were happier.
-Highlights that we are in control of our own happiness and can choose to engage in activities that allrviate feelings of loe mood.
Authenticity of goodness and excellence
-States that feelings of happiness and goodness are just as natural and authentic as feelings of anxiety and stress.
-Positive psychology says that positive feelings can be scientifically studied as they are as real as depression.
Signature strengths
-Seligman says that our signature strengths, such as kindness or generousity, should be focused on in order to encourage goodness and excellence in the individual.
-The authentic traits can be developed and used as a buffer to help protect the individual from some future mental health problems.
