Experimental design Flashcards
Repeated measures design
-Participants all take part in both the control and experimental conditions in the experiment.
Independent groups design
-Pariticpants only take part in one condition only. Each condition has a different group of participants.
Matched pairs design
-Participants are matched on important characteristics, e.g, IQ or age. Each member of the pair is then placed into separate conditions.
Repeated measures design advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
-Participant variables are removed, increasing internal validity
-Requires fewer participants, increasing external validity
Disadvantages
-Order effects, lowers internal validity
-Demand characteristics, lowers internal validity
Independent groups design advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
-No order effects, increases internal validity
-Less chance of demand characteristics increases internal validity
Disadvantages
-Participant variables lower interal validity
-Requires more participants
Matched pairs design advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
-Controls participant variables, increasing internal validity
-No order effects, increasing internal validity
Disadvantages
-Can’t control all participant variables, lowering internal validity
-Time consuming
