populaiton genetics Flashcards
what is population genetics?
the study of genetics with different populations
what is genetic variation?
different variations of things across different populations
what is a genetic mutation?
a change in dna sequence that affects how genes are expressed
is genetic mutation something that happens often?
no. it occurs in less than 1% of the pop. it can be a single thing or multiple pairs
what does mutation mean for the population?
it allows for variability in the population
what is a snp?
it is a type of mutation, it is usually not that serious, but sometimes it is. it is the most common type of genetic mutation.
what is our goal with the affected and unaffected populations in a genetic study?
we want them to be represented equally
what is the downside to the polygenetic risk score?
we need more minority representation
what is a halotype?
a section of genes that are inherited from 1 parent (think about HAlotype=HAploid)
what is migration?
the genetic diversity moving
what is genetic drift?
a type of migration that can cause frequency changes in alleles
what is a bottleneck population?(think about orbeez coming out of a bottleneck)
when there is a significant reduction in populaiton size in a generation. these things happen due to like disasters and stuff
what is the founder affect?
when a smaller part of the population picks up and moves and reproduces with a new population. (french acadians mingling with new population)
what is natural selection?
when traits over time have become less present or more present because of the adaptation for survival
what is gene flow?
when genes from one population is passed to another due to breeding and such
