Q

o ‘we didn’t start breeding like rabbits, we stopped dying like flies’- USEEEEEEEEE
- Mistake to assume the concept only relates to the idea of pop density - those that are densely populated= overpopulated
- This is often incorrect because the measure applies only to the relationship between population size and available resources

A

o A densely populated country such as the Netherlands (511 people per km2) can enjoy high average standard of living
o While a less densely populated Mali – 16 per km2- struggles to provide the basic needs for its populated because of a poor resource base

Q

who came up with carrying capacity and ecological footprint

A

o PROFESSOR WILLIAM REES applied the concept to humans and suggest that the measure of carry capacity can be flexible depending on average lifestyle
o Together with his PhD student, Mathis Wackernagel, Rees developed the concept on an ecological footprint

Q

2019 global hectares avaibale

A
  • 12.2 billion hectares of biologically productive land and water on earth
  • Shared between the 2019 population of 7.7 billion
  • Each person would have nearly 1.6 global hectares available to them
  • Yet current average is 3.2 hectares

Q

However, ecological footprint values vary enormously and distributed unevenly in the world

A
  • Some countries at 1.6 or below, but most over consume and are above
  • If all humans had an ecological footprint ismialr to the averga eiNidna, the Earth could support 10 billion
  • If everyone lived as the UK does, the Earth could only support 2.8 billion
  • US- 1.5 billion
  • In general, ecological footprints in many HDEs are slowly decreasing in size because of deindustrialisation, increased environmental awareness and strategies to mitigate consumption and waste (for example, recycling). However, footprints in developing countries such as China and India are rising because of industrialisation and increased consumption

Q

droughst

A
  • The negative feedback effect of climate change (resulting from pollution) on population has already been seen in regions of sub-Saharan Africa, with droughts leading to famines in the Sahel in 2010 and in East Africa in 2011.
  • Over 100,000 people died during these events, which are likely to become more frequent occurrences
