What are the potential signs / symptoms of polymyositis?

A

Proximal muscle weakness (and possibly also muscle pain), frequently affecting the hip extensors -> difficulty rising from chair or climbing stairs
Dysphagia and oesophageal motility can be a problem in 1/3 patients
Low grade fever
Lymphadenopathy

How is polymyositis managed?

A

1st line - corticosteroids

Adjunct - specialised exercise therapy

What are the potential complications of polymyositis?

A

Interstitial lung disease
Heart failure
Increased risk of cancer - nasopharyngeal, lung, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, bladder
