Polymers. Flashcards
Name the three main groups of polymers?
Thermoplastics, thermosetting plastics and biodegradable plastics.
Define thermoplastics:
It can be repeatedly reheated and reshaped.
Define thermosetting plastics:
It cannot be reheated or reshaped once set.
Due to the strong intermolecular bonds.
ABS characteristics and uses.
characteristics: Impact and scratch resistant as well as lightweight.
uses: toys, safety helmets and computer cases.
LDPE characteristics and uses.
characteristics: Tough, good chemical resistance, weatherproof and low level of rigidity.
uses: detergent bottles, packaging and bin liners.
PP characteristics and uses.
characteristics: good chemical resistance, tough and good fatigue resistance.
uses: folders, food containers and folio cases.
HIPS characteristics and uses.
characteristics: hard, rigid and tough.
uses: yoghurt pots, toilet seats and single use drink cups.
Nylon characteristics and uses.
characteristics: tough, corrosion resistant, low coefficient of friction and dries quickly.
uses: bearings and gears.
PVC characteristics and uses.
characteristics: tough, flexible, good weathering resistance and good chemical resistance.
uses: hose pipes, cable insulation and inflatable products.
UF characteristics and uses. SET
characteristics: very hard, heat resistant, good insulator but brittle.
uses: electrical plug socket.
MF characteristics and uses. SET
characteristics: hard, opaque, heat resistant, food safe and chemical resistant.
uses: plates and laminates.
