Q

What is MIG welding?

A

MIG(metal inert gas) is a fabrication process used to weld thin metal(steel or aluminium).
Using an electric art to create heat and melt the joint area, a wire electrode (made out of the same metal being welded) melts in the arc and fills in the gap joining the two pieces.

Q

What is MIG welding suitable for?

A

It is suitable for box or tube because the heat electric arc is isolated to a small area. For example, bike or climbing frames.
Used for both mass and one off production.

Q

What is TIG welding?

A

TIG(tungsten inert gas) welding is a fabrication process used to weld steel, copper, magnesium and alloys.
Similar to MIG but the electrode is made from tungsten and does not melt. Instead, a separate filler rod is added, this means the operator need to be higher skilled.

Q

What is oxy-acetylene welding?

A

Oxy-acetylene welding is the use of two high pressure gasses- oxygen and acetylene to form an intense flame. The metal has a grinded out V-shape that is to be joined. The joint area is heated and the filler metal melts with heat on the inside of the V-shape filling the gap and forming a join.

Q

What is Oxy-acetylene welding suitable for?

A

Oxy-acetylene welding is used to weld low carbon steel sheet, tube or plates when MIG welding is not available. Mainly used for quick repairs or when their isn’t an electric power supply.

Q

What is spot welding?

A

The two parts of sheet metal are overlapped and a spot of heat from the welder causes both surfaces to turn into liquid, mix and fuse together.

Q

What is soldering?

A

Soldering requires the metal surface and filler to be clean, the filler material also has to have a low melting point.

Q

What is brazing?

A

Brazing uses less temperature than welding. IT melts a filler rod made from brass using a blow torch. It is not as strong as welding but can be done in smaller workshops and schools.
