Manufacturing with metal 2. (wasting) Flashcards
What is wasting?
A manufacturing press which remove material in order to shape it.
What is milling?
Milling machines look like a pillar drill, the work is clamped onto the table of the machine. The table can move vertically as well as horizontally. The milling process can be manual but is mostly done by automated machines.
What is turning?
Material is placed between a lathe and chuck where it is spun. Cutting tools are then pressed up against the material removing and shaping it.
What is plasma cutting?
Plasma cutting uses ionised gas that is electrically conductive. The plasma cutter uses the gas to transfer energy to the plate to be cut. An electrical arc is generated forming a jet of plasma (28,000) which cuts the material. Can be done manually or by CAM. For steel plates and bars.
What is flame cutting?
A mixture of oxygen and acetylene gas is used to create an intensely hot flame, melting away the material. The finish is not as good as plasma cutting.
