Why do we use finishes on wood?

A

Colouring or staining enhance the natural grain of the timber. Give it a sheen, shine or matt finish.
They can add protection: waterproof, less prone to insect attack, tougher, prevent decay and easier to clean.

What is acrylic varnish?

A

A clear finish that sits on top of the timber it is applied using a brush or a roller. It protects the wood from moisture and enhances the gain making the wood look darker.

What is a polyurethane varnish?

A

It is a hardwearing type of varnish. It offers the products lots of protection from scratches and marks. It is clear so it does not make the material darker is applied using a brush or roller.

What are water based paints?

A

Environmentally friendly paint to add colour to the timber. A wide range of colours available. Only used on manufactured boards. A neutral primer is applied first.

What is a wood stain?

A

This permanently colours the wood by soaking into it and colouring it all the way through. It cannot be sanded off after applied. It changes the woods colour so that the grain can still be seen but it will not protect it. It is applied using a brush.

What is wood wax?

A

It is applied using a cloth or wire wool. It enhances the natural grain and protects the wood but it needs regular reapplication.

What is Danish oil?

A

Similar to the effect of varnish but it soaks into the timber instead of sitting on the surface. It is easy to apply with a cloth. Darkens the wood and enhances the grain. Protects the wood from decay but not as effective.

What is pressure treating?

A

This is a process of forcing wood preservative(liquid) into the wood under pressure in a vacuum. The preservative protects the wood from decay, fungal and insect attack.
