Polixenes 4. Flashcards
Quote
“I multiply with one we thank you many thousands that go before it”
Overview
Act 1 scene 2
This scene depicts Hermione convincing polixenes to stay in which causes Leontes jealousy as he agrees while reminiscing in their childhood together
Analysis
This quote depicts a gentle, kind man who is respectful to his friends by showing his gratitude for being allowed to stay with Leontes and Hermione
Dramatic method
This quote contrasts his characterisation within act 4 scene 4 as he is turned by hatred and a lack of control after learning about this forbidden marriage causing confusion with the audience as they were introduced to a thoughtful man
Theme
This deals with the theme of loyalty and service as he shows gratitude and loyalty to his friend. However, later contradicts this service when it comes to his own son
Context
Within the renaissance period of 1500-1660 being born Out of (supposed) wedlock led to many restrictions on children such as discrimination, prejudice and could result in being put to death.
Perdita was seen to come from a lower class family (irony as she was princess) resulting in rejection for her inter-class relationship that would’ve brought shame and rejection onto the family.
This relates to Kings being seen as omnipotent as their title has been given by god himself he sees this betrayal of his son as going against god as he goes against him.
Link
This quote contrasts to his vulgar behaviour in act 4 scene 4 however, as he is rekindled with Leontes his kindness comes back suggesting that he only reacted in that way as he felt betrayed by his son. However, others state that this is his true colours to those who are seen to be of a different class as the only reason he reconciled was due to finding out peridta was actually a princess.
Extra quote
Polixenes being respectful
“Gentle maiden” referring nicely to peridta
“This is the prettiest low-born lass that ever ran on the green-sward”
“Too noble for this place”
