Lack of party discipline so need for negotiation

Loosely affiliated groups
Main party’s powerful e.g. Mitch McConnell led removal of Steve King in racist comments. Then lost seat in big committee

Democratic socialist of America
50000 membership and helps secure victory of progressive dems but independently from dem party organisation
Helping AOC get elected

Conservative/populist/libertarian tea party

Chaired bay respector national committee, but huge increase in incumbent presidents recommending anonymous party bureaucrats or former elected officials

Common ground- wall street, lowering prescription, some criminal justice issues
Divide- Reps: cut jail numbers to save money, pro life and no gun control
Dems- more rehabilitation, pro choice and gun control

Reps: 1994 Newt Gingrich contract with america but trend continued
Dems- midterms 2018 ‘better deal’ programme focusing on better jobs, wadges and future

2018 showed that in the senate , party unity votes defined as those with each party majority on opposing sides fell from 69% 2017 to 50% 2018 2nd lowest since 2002

Feb 2020: senate passing resolution to limit Trumps power to order against military action against Iran w/o congress’s permission and 8 reps joined dem senators to pass meaure
March 2020- house passing bipartisan bill care act in respond to COVID19 pandemic, 10 house republicans voted to impeach Trump in jan 2021
Party unity- no policy’s?
Some of Trump’s less conventional policy’s have led to unease in rep quarters, such as foreign policy, US commitment to NATO and introduction of tariffs
Party unity- no, leader and candidates?
No reason for candidates to subscribe to party’s entire policy platform. Candidates independent as they secure own nominations by their own primary campaigns so can afford to be selective
Party unity- no outsiders?
Trumps takeover of the republican party even though he was an outsiders
Few legislators showed enthusiasm for openly criticising the president in a clear indication of the party uniting around controversial and often unpredictable figures
