the government wanted to uphold democracy and freedom of speech but also didnt want the democracy being overthrown

what effect did the Emergency Law have?
it reduced the number of open protests and led to more arrests
however many decided to turn to more violent methods of protest which led to the rise in terrorism in the 1980s
what was the BEFA and what effect did it have on the BND?
it centralised policing in the FRG with the BND receiving access to all police information
increased the success of the Emergency Law which led to less terrorist activity
what was the GSG-9?
Grenzschutzgruppe 9 was set up to act as a special operations unit to be used against terrorists

- arrests of Bader-Meinhof members

Anti-Radical decree which allowed political vetting of anyone applying to a state job set up in 1972
