How did the Nazis gain exposure?
By joining the National Opposition against the Young plan in 1929. It gave Hitler a stage to promote the Nazi Party.
What did the Wall Street Crash do to the Muller government?
It divided it into 2:
- those who wanted to support the jobless
- those who didn’t want to spend on jobless
The Muller government ends up collapsing and a new government led by Bruning is brought to power.
Why were new elections called by Bruning’s government?
Bruning wanted to pass a new budget which was rejected by the Reichstag in July 1930. Bruning used Article 48 to force his budget through the Reichstag. The Reichstag were very unhappy and told Bruning to withdraw the budget. Bruning tells Hindenburg to dissolve the Reichstag and new elections were called.
Who did Hitler purge in 1931?
Hitler purged the SA in Berlin after their leader, Walter Stennes, revolted against Hitler. Stennes was expelled from the Nazi Party.

Bruning used Article 48 to ban the SA and the SS. This was introduced by Groner who was the Interior Minister.

Kurt von Schleicher believed that the only way German politics could be saved was to get Hitler into power.
How did von Schleicher get rid of Bruning?
In May 1932 von Schleicher met with Hindenburg and asked him to remove Bruning
What made it easier for Hindenburg to dismiss Bruning?
Bruning was trying to get rid of the Junkers (wealthy landowners). Hindenburg himself and his friends were all Junkers too. Hindenburg uses this to get rid of Bruning on 30th May 1932.
Who replaced Bruning?
von Papen was made the new Chancellor by Hindenburg. He was an aristocrat which made him likeable by Hindenburg. He led a non-party government.
What did von Schleicher do in von Papen’s government?
von Schleicher became the Defence Minister. He uses this role to get rid of the ban on the SA and the SS which causes an increase in street violence by the SA.
What happened to the Lander of Prussia?
The SPD controlled Lander of Prussia was removed by von Papen (he uses the violence caused as an excuse). Prussia was now controlled by the government.
