poison:
(a toxin) - is a substance that may cause temporary or permanent damage if it enters the body in a sufficient quantity. Poisons can be swallowed, inhaled, absorbed through skin, splashed into the eyes or injected. Once in the body, they may enter bloodstream and be carried to all organs and tissues.
It may harm the GIT or cause widespread damage if they enter bloodstream and transported to other parts of the body. It may include common household substances or drugs.
Swallowed poisons
Recognition features of poisons:
evidence, local, general
History of ingestion/exposure. Stains about mouth Presence of poison container Breath odor Nausea, vomiting (may be bloodstained) Diarrhea, abdominal colic Pupil may be contracted Impaired consciousness
First aid: Your aims
maintain (ABC) the airway, breathing and circulation, - to remove any contaminated clothing, - to identify the poison and - to arrange urgent removal to hospital (Poisoning Center).
If the casualty is conscious:
Ask him what he has swallowed, when and how much • Try to reassure him • Call for help • Give information about the swallowed poison to
emergency services when arrive

the poison is strong acid or strong alkali or petroleum
product, or
the victim is unconscious or convulsive

History of drinking alcohol A smell of alcohol Empty bottles or cans Flushed and moist face Deep, slow, noisy breathing Slow, irregular pulse Hypothermia Impaired consciousness
