PNF STRETCHING Flashcards
1
Q
2 main parts
A
Stretch receptors and Golgi tendon organs
2
Q
Stretch receptors
A
- aka muscle spindles
- detect stretch in muscles
- sends info to brain then back to muscles telling them to contract!
- makes sure muscle doesn’t overstretch
3
Q
Golgi tendon organ
A
- senses tendon stretch
- causes muscle inhibition so less likely to tear
- autogenic inhibition = to relax
- activated when there is tension in the muscle
4
Q
How does PNF stretching increase flexibility?
A
Golgi tendon organ tricks and overpowers the stretch receptors causing autogenic inhibition allowing you to stretch muscles further
5
Q
Autogenic inhibition
A
When there is a sudden relaxation of the muscle in response to high tension
The receptors involved in this process are Golgi tendon organs
