Pneumothorax Flashcards
Definition
Pneumothorax is a medical condition in which air accumulates in the space between the lung and the chest wall, causing the lung to collapse.
Aetiology/ causes
Pneumothorax can be caused by a variety of factors, including trauma to the chest, lung disease, or medical procedures such as mechanical ventilation or thoracentesis.
Risk factors
Smoking
Lung disease
A family history of the condition.
Epidemiology/ Population affected
The incidence of pneumothorax is approximately 18-28 cases per 100,000 people per year.
It is more common in men than in women and is most commonly diagnosed in people between the ages of 20 and 40.
Clinical presentation
Sudden chest pain
Shortness of breath
Rapid heartbeat
Fatigue.
In severe cases, a pneumothorax can cause a complete collapse of the lung, which can be life-threatening.
Prognosis
The prognosis for pneumothorax depends on the size and severity of the condition, as well as the underlying cause.
Smaller pneumothoraces may resolve on their own without treatment, while larger or more severe cases may require medical intervention, such as the insertion of a chest tube to remove the air from the chest cavity.
With appropriate treatment, the prognosis for most cases of pneumothorax is good.
DDX
Pulmonary embolism or a heart attack.
Other conditions that can cause chest pain and shortness of breath may also need to be ruled out, such as angina, pericarditis, or pleurisy.
