What is pneumonia?
Inflammation of the lungs with consolidation or interstitial infiltrates
What are the typical bacterial causative organisms?
Strep. pneumoniae

What are the typical viral causative organisms?
Influenza

What are the atypical causative organisms?
Mycoplasma, legionella, Chlamydophila psittaci/pneumoniae
What are the symptoms of pneumonia?
Fever Cough Dyspnoea Chest pain Sputum
What are the risk factors for pneumonia?
> 65
COPD
Exposure to cigarette smoke
Alcohol abuse
What are the investigations for pneumonia?
CXR Pulse oximetry ABG FBC U+Es CRP LFTs Sputum culture
What is the management for pneumonia?
Low severity - oral/IV amoxicillin
Moderate severity - IV amoxicillin + clarithromycin
High severity - IV amoxicillin/clavulonate + clarithromycin
What does CURB-65 stand for?
Confusion Urea >7 Resp rate >30 BP <90 systolic or <60 diastolic over 65
