Q
III. Do you believe in the ongoing work of miraculous sign gifts such as speaking in tongues?
A
- No. It has to have a purpose.
- When tongues was first used in Acts at the very beginning of the church, thousands of people were gathered from all kinds of nations and languages.
- The apostles did not speak in different languages. They spoke in their own language. But what the hearers heard they heard in their own language.
- The purpose of tongues in this moment was to spread the gospel to people who did not speak the same language as the apostles.
- Today, it seems when people appear to use “tongues”, the purpose is to separate/distinguish themselves from others and appear more “holy”. This is a very pharisaical approach to the use of tongues.
- 1 Corinthians 13:8-10: Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.
- The use of tongues, instigated by the Holy Spirit, has ceased.
