A

tumor composed of nerve tissue (benign)

17
Q

rhabdomyoma

A

tumor of striated muscle

18
Q

sarcoma

A

tumor of connective tissue (i.e. bone or cartilage, highly malignant)

19
Q

benign

A

Not malignant, non-recurrent, favorable for recovery

20
Q

biological therapy

A

Treatment of cancer with biological response modifiers (BRM) that work with immune system (AKA biotherapy, immunotherapy)

21
Q

carcinoma in situ

A

Cancer in early stage before invading surrounding tissues

22
Q

chemotherapy

A

Treatment of cancer with drugs

23
Q

encapsulated

A

Enclosed within a capsule, benign or malignant tumors that have not spread beyond capsule of the organ which it originated

24
Q

hospice

A

Provides palliative or supportive care for terminally ill patients and their family

Offered for those with prognosis < 6 months which curative forms of treatment are no longer possible or desired

25
malignant
Tending to become progressively worse to cause death
26
palliative
Providing relief but not cure Symptom management is provided to relieve suffering in all stages of disease, not limited to care at the end of life. Can be given with curative or life-prolonging treatment, or hospice care
27
radiation therapy (XRT)
Treatment of cancer with radioactive substance, x-ray, or radiation (AKA radiation oncology, radiotherapy)
28
remission
Improvement or absence of signs of disease
29
Neoadjuvant therapy
Cancer treatment that precedes any other treatment (i.e. administering chemotherapy or radiation therapy to a patient before surgery)
30
Adjuvant chemotherapy
Use of chemotherapy after or in combination with another form of cancer treatment (i.e. administering chemotherapy after surgery or with radiation therapy)
31
Brachytherapy
Use of radiotherapy, source of radiation placed within or close to the area being treated
32
Biological Therapy
Treatment of cancer with use of man-made biological response modifiers (BRM) that occur naturally in the body. Alter immune system’s interaction with cancer cells to restore, direct, or boost the body’s ability to fight disease. Examples: rituximab (Rituxan) - monoclonal antibody, lymphomas Thalidomide - multiple myeloma Interferon - lymphomas
