Pleura Flashcards
Pericardium
fibroserous covering of the heart; thin but strong, 3 inseparable parts (serous/fibrous/pericardial mediastinal pleura)
Parietal fibrous layer (heart)
layer directly underneath the pericardial mediastinal pleura; fibrous; inseparable from the serous, external to serous
Parietal serous layer (heart)
closed sac, envelopes most of the heart; shiny, internal to fibrous layer, inseparable
Visceral (epicardium)
pleura that is tightly adhered to the heart; separated from the parietal pleura by the pericardial cavity
Phrenicopericardial ligament
continuation of the fibrous pericardium to the sternum and the diaphragm; located in the ventral mediastinum along with a variable amount of fat
Pleurae
serous membranes that cover the lungs and line the walls of the thorax; form left and right sacs that enclose the parietal cavities; each consists of visceral and parietal parts
Parietal pleura
attached to the thoracic wall by the endothoracic fascia; divided into costal, diaphragmatic, mediastinal
Costal pleura
covers the inner surface of the ribs and their associated intercostal and transversus thoracis muscles
Mediastinal pleura
layers that covers the sides of the partition between the two pleural cavities
Mediastinum
includes 2 mediastinal pleura and the space between them; enclosed within are the thymus, lymph nodes, heart, aorta, trachea, esophagus, vagus nerves and other nerves/vessels; divided into 3 parts
Diaphragmatic pleura
covers the cranial surface of the diaphragm
Visceral (pulmonary) pleura
closely attaches to the surfaces of the lungs
Plica vena cavae
loose fold of pleura derived from the right caudal mediastinal portion of the pleural sac that surrounds the caudal vena cava
Root of the lung
composed of pleura and bronchi, vessels, nerves entering the lung; here mediastinal parietal pleura is continuous with pulmonary pleura
Pulmonary ligament
caudal to the hilus, connection of mediastinal parietal pleura and pulmonary pleura forms a free border; between the caudal lobe of the lung and mediastinum at the level of the esophagus
