Nerves Flashcards
Phrenic
Somatic; diaphragm, lateral to mediastinum
Sympathetic trunk
Autonomic, Sympathetic, Pre and Post ganglionic; include chain ganglion, branch off to rami communicans, cranial to Greater splanchnic n.
Chain ganglia
Autonomic, Sympathetic; on sympathetic trunk, rami communicans branch down off it
Rami communicans
Autonomic, Sympathetic, Pre and Post ganglionic; off chain ganglion
Greater (major) splanchnic
Autonomic, Sympathetic, Pre-ganglionic; deep in abdomen, caudal to diaphragm
Cervicothoracic (stellate) ganglion
Autonomic, Sympathetic; lateral, branches vertebral and ansa subclavian
Vertebral
Autonomic, Sympathetic, Post-ganglionic; runs with vertebral artery
Ansa subclavian
Autonomic, Sympathetic, Pre and Post-ganglionic; runs above and below subclavian artery, connects the middle cervical ganglion and the cervicothoracic (stellate) ganglion
Middle cervical ganglion
Autonomic, Sympathetic (Parasympathetic pass through); medial, where vagus goes through to head down, sympathetic runs across ansa subclavian off middle cervical ganglion
Vagosympathetic trunk
Autonomic, Sympathetic and Parasympathetic, Pre (and post?)-ganglionic; runs in carotid sheath, vagus impulses run down to middle cervical, sympathetic run up to head
Recurrent laryngeal
Somatic; L travels down with vagus nerve, wraps around ligamentum arteriosum then heads back cranially to voice box; R wraps around subclavian artery
Vagus (R&L)
Autonomic, Parasympathetic, Pre-ganglionic; nerve below middle cervical ganglion
Vagal branches (dorsal and ventral)
Autonomic, Parasympathetic, Pre-ganglionic; branches on R&L vagus nerve to go dorsally and ventrally around esophagus
Vagal trunks (dorsal and ventral)
Autonomic, Parasympathetic, Pre-ganglionic; where R and L dorsal and ventral vagus branches anastomes
Intercostal
Somatic; have lateral and ventral cutaneous branches and branches medial to these that go largely to muscles
