How much further does the pleural cavity extend further than the lungs?
Superiorly the pleural cavity projects as much as 3-4cm above the first costal cartilage
How to the left and right pleural cavities approach each other?
They approach each other posterior to the sternum
Does the parietal pleura reach the midline?
Not as close on the left side as it does on the right because the middle mediastinum containing the pericardium and the heart bulges to the left
What does the costal pleura extend to?
Rib8 in the midclavicular line and to rib10 in the mixdillary line
What is the costal pleura opposed to?
The mediastinal pleura and the diaphragmatic pleura
In quiet respiration to the pleural cavity fill?
They don’t fill completely, so it creates a potential space or recesses where two regions of parietal pleura are opposed
What are happens in forced expiration?
The lungs expand into the potential spaces
Where can abdominal fluid be found?
In the potential spaces
