What do the bones of the thorax consist of?
Sternum, 12 pairs of ribs and their costal cartilages and the 12 thoracic vertebrae (T1-12)
What do the bones of the thorax provide?
Attachment points for the muscles of respiration, move to facilitate breathing and provide protection for the vulnerable organs within the thorax
How does the sternum sit?
Anteriorly
What does the sternum consist of?
The manubrium, sternal body and xiphoid process
What do the ribs articulate with?
The thoracic vertebrae - it is the end of the rib that joins (called the head of the rib)
What ribs are true ribs?
1-7, they articulate directly with the sternum anteriorly with short costal cartilages
What ribs are false ribs?
Ribs 8-12 - false ribs articulate indirectly with the sternum anteriorly via long shared costal cartilages - don’t articulate with the STERNUM
What ribs are floating ribs?
Ribs 11-12, they do not articulate with the sternum anteriorly, they are shorter and pointier than the other ribs
What makes up the thoracic cage?
12 thoracic vertebrae
