Hilum Of The Lung Flashcards
What are the roots of the lungs?
Several structures that the lungs attach to the heart and trachea by
Define the hilum
The area in which the roots enter and leave the lung
What are the structures that make up the root of the lung and enter and leave at the hilum?
A pulmonary artery, two pulmonary veins, a main bronchus, bronchial vessels, nerves and lymphatics
What happens at the hilum?
The visceral pleura reflects to become the parietal pleura
What are the exact position of the structures at the hilum?
Can vary BUT, the pulmonary artery is usually more superior, the pulmonary veins are inferior and the bronchi are more posterior
Describe wall thickness of bronchi
Thickets and strongest walls, they are cartilaginous and do not compress or collapse easily
Describe wall thickness of the pulmonary arteries
Thinner walls than bronchi, thicker than pulmonary veins. Arterial walls are elastic and if compressed will spring back into shape on being released
Describe wall thickness of pulmonary veins
Thinnest walls, they are easily collapsible and are not elastic so do not retain their tubular shape as easily
