plate margins Flashcards

1
Q

constructive margins

A

at constructive margins the convection currents drive the two oceanic crusts apart.

magma rises up through the gap in the crust forming a shield volcano

over time the new land (magma) pulls away from the gap due to ridge push

the volcanoes erupt repeatedly forming a mid ocean ridge and volcanic islands (e.g: Iceland)

Q

destructive margins

A

at destructive margins the older denser oceanic crust subducts beneath the continental crust

where the plate subducts the extra crust melts in the magma forming pressure and friction

this creates earthquakes and composite volcanoes
the extra magma rises through the crust forming steep, violent volcanoes and volcanic islands called island arcs

where 2 plates meet an ocean trench is formed
( Indo Australian plate collides with the subducting Pacific plate forming the volcanic islands of New Zealand)

Q

conservative margins

A

at conservative margins the plates slide past each other in different directions/ different speeds

this creates a build up of friction and pressure

overtime the pressure creates a huge release of energy called an earthquake

the land at the margin becomes crumpled forming fault lines ( e.g: San Andreas fault )

Q

collision margins

A

the convection currents in the mantle drive the continental crust together

land is forced upwards to form fold mountains ( e.g: the Himalayas)

land also crumples downwards to form mountain roots

The pressure and friction from the collision creates powerful earthquakes
