practical action works with farmers to find a suitable site to build a dyke which is 60cm high around the outskirts of the field
then dig a ditch for the fish to live in during the dry season
how do the dykes have dual purpose
- keep the fish in the paddy fields
- vegetable cultivation around the field

- plant rice in rows 35cm apart
- fill 50% of the ditch with water
- purify water with lime and fertiliser
- rice starts to shoot increase water level to 12-15 cm
- release fingerlings into water, add more water
explain the harvesting stage of the rice-fish farming scheme
- drain paddy fields to harvest rice and fish will be collected in ditches
- 100% increase in yields as fish eat pests, their faeces act as fertiliser
- also provide a source of protein for the family as they can eat extra fish
