plate boundaries Flashcards
what are the 4 types of plate boundaries?
Deconstructive, Constructive, Conservative, Collision
(Destructive) Boundaries
Plates move towards each other.
One plate may be forced under the other in a process called subduction.
This can lead to the formation of mountains, volcanoes, or earthquakes.
Example: The Himalayas (collision of Indian and Eurasian plates).
(Constructive) Boundaries:
Plates move away from each other.
Magma from the mantle rises to fill the gap, creating new crust.
This often happens at the mid-ocean ridges.
Example: The Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
(Conservative) Boundaries
Plates slide past each other horizontally.
This can cause earthquakes but doesn’t form or destroy crust.
Example: The San Andreas Fault in California.
Collision Boundaries
two continental plates collide.
Creates mountains.
