E: Kemperman et al. (1998) found that rats kept complex enviroments developed more new neurons than rats kept in lab cages.

E: Maguire et al. measured the grey matter in taxi drivers brains using MRI scanning, and found a positive correlation between the size of their posterior hippocampus and how long they had working as a taxi driver.

E: This was a way of operationalising their navigational experience.

L: This shows that the more navigationals experience the drivers had, the larger the posterior hippocamus had become, supporting plascitiy in response to experience

E: In a controlled experiment, rats given transplants of stem cells into their brains developed more neuron-like cells in the area of the injury than control rats.

A

16 right handed male london taxi drivers particpated; all had been driving for more than 1.5 years.

Scans of 50 healthy right-handed males who dd not drive taxi were included for comparison.

A

1) Increased grey matter was found in the brains of taxi drivers compared with controls in two brain region, right and left hippocami. The increased volume was found in posterior (rear) hippocamus.

2} a correlation was found between the size of their posterior hippocampus and how long they had working as a taxi driver.
